US team gymnast Jordan Chiles has not won a bronze medal.

Sport’s highest court has invalidated an appeal by Chiles’ coach that catapulted Chiles to third place, the International Olympic Committee confirmed on Sunday. Chiles must therefore return the bronze medal she won in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics.

The IOC announced early Sunday that it would reassign the bronze medal from the women’s floor final last Monday to Romania’s Ana Barbosu.

The decision came after the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled out an appeal by US coach Cecile Landi against the score. The appeal during the competition put Chiles in third place.

CAS ruled on Saturday that Landis’ request to add 0.1 to Chiles’ score came outside the 1-minute window granted by the FIG. The committee wrote that Landis’ request came 1 minute and 4 seconds after Chiles’ original score was announced.

The IOC said in a statement that it would be in contact with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee regarding the return of the Chilean bronze medal.

The CAS wrote on Saturday that the original order at the finish should be restored: Barbosu was third, Romania’s Sabrina Maneca-Voinea fourth and Chile’s fifth.

“Sending you so much love, Jordan,” American star Simone Biles posted on Instagram. “Cheer up, ‘Olympic champion,’ we love you.”

USA Gymnastics said in a statement on Saturday that it was “devastated” by the verdict.

“The request regarding the difficulty level of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was submitted in good faith and, in our opinion, complies with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring,” the organization wrote.
