Tucson official and others speak about increase in shootings in the last week

TUCSON, Arizona (13 News) – Since last Sunday, August 11, 13 News has reported on five separate shootings in the Tucson area. There were ten victims and one person was killed.

Tucson authorities are currently working on how to deal with so many incidents in such a short period of time.

6th District Councilwoman Karin Uhlich met with Tucson police last Thursday following the mass shooting at the intersection of Speedway and Swan.

“More than 180 shots in just a few minutes,” said Uhlich. “Really, very, very worrying intensity of the shots.”

Following that meeting, we reported on three more shootings within three days in the city of Tucson.

“The last week across the city has been shocking and concerning for all of us as there have been a number of shootings involving firearms,” Uhlich said.

Patricia Maisch has lived in Tucson for over 40 years and the shootings she witnessed were terrible news for her.

“From the call to 911 to the sheriff’s arrival, the ambulances, the hospitals and rehab,” Maisch said, “all the way to people having to stay in care facilities for the rest of their lives.”

City leaders are working together to design the next step, with TPD sharing various assessments and approaches they plan to implement within their force.

Now District 6 is using these evaluations to determine where crime is occurring and how the city can make real changes.

“They have good data on what we’re seeing in the area with certain types of businesses. So the mayor and city council will be looking at ordinances or ways we can address business practices, hours of operation, security requirements. Anything we can do to prevent businesses from becoming magnets and creating environments that potentially encourage these types of incidents,” Uhlich said.
