Teenager dies weeks after lightning strike in downtown St. Petersburg

A 16-year-old girl who was struck by lightning in late July has died after weeks in hospital, the District Six coroner’s office said.

Ashley King, 16, was one of five teenagers seeking shelter from a thunderstorm in downtown St. Petersburg on July 25 when lightning struck a banyan tree under which the teens were standing.

After the lightning strike, King went into cardiac arrest but was resuscitated by paramedics when they arrived at the hospital. A GoFundMe page set up to cover King’s medical expenses said she was hospitalized and required intensive care.

On Monday, the girl’s mother, Toni King, posted on her public Facebook page: “At 12:23 am Ashley took her last breath. She will live on forever in our hearts and minds.”

William Pellan, chief of investigations for the District Six Medical Examiner’s Office, which serves Pinellas and Pasco counties, confirmed Ashley King’s death Monday afternoon.

The GoFundMe page, started by Kellie Tickell, describes Ashley King as a “daughter, sister, granddaughter and cousin.” The GoFundMe page says she is “much loved.”

“Her family and friends will always cherish her memory and strive to share her passion for life with others in her name,” the GoFundMe campaign said in an update on Monday.

The lightning struck three other teenagers and they suffered electrocution or burns. Another girl escaped unharmed. The three other teenagers who were struck were taken to hospital but were in stable condition after the incident.

According to the father of one of the affected teenagers, the group of five friends were enjoying the last weeks of summer vacation before a new school year began at Hollins High School.

According to a Facebook post by Toni King, Ashley King was scheduled to start this school year as a junior.

On Monday, the GoFundMe page read:

“Ashley: ‘If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.'”
