August 19, 2024 – Start Monday, August 19thSchool has started again in Berkeley County, WV, and other counties in the tri-state area aren’t far behind. That means buses will be on the road transporting school children. School bus safety is not only incredibly important for the drivers and the children who get on and off them, but it could also be the nail in the coffin for your driver’s license or your finances.

In West Virginia, the first offense of failing to obey school bus stop signs results in a 60-day driver’s license suspension, a $500-$1,000 fine, or a maximum of 6 months in jail. The second offense results in a 180-day driver’s license suspension, a $1,000-$1,500 fine, and the same possible jail time. The THIRD offense results in a 1-year driver’s license suspension, a $2,000 fine, or a 48-hour to 6-month jail time.

Other states, including Pennsylvania, have recently installed camera systems on school bus handlebars to track who is driving through the steering columns and send tickets to drivers. Thousands of people have been arrested in that state as well. In the last five years alone, more than 25,000 people have been arrested for illegally passing school buses and speeding in school zones.
