John Hendrickson, a philanthropist and husband of the late Marylou Whitney, died suddenly in a Saratoga hospital on August 19, according to Albany Times-Union Monday.

The Albany Times-Union reported that Hendrickson became ill around noon and later died in the hospital. The cause of death was not disclosed. Maureen Lewi, longtime friend of Whitney and Hendrickson, was with him in the hospital and confirmed his death to the Times-Union.

“I was in the hospital holding his hand,” Lewi told the Times-Union. “I talked to him, but he didn’t respond – he was gone.”

After Whitney’s death at age 93 in 2019, Hendrickson continued the couple’s charitable activities, including a $1.2 million donation to support workers on Saratoga’s backstretch and to build a gazebo on the property. Hendrickson also supported the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame and served as its chairman since 2017.
