Ludhiana MC launches special garbage disposal campaign

Despite the rains recorded in the city on Monday, teams from all four zones of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) removed garbage from the dumping grounds in different parts of the city. Dumping grounds are non-designated places in the city where residents dump their garbage in the open.

On the first day of the five-day campaign, cleanliness drives were organised in various areas including Chandigarh Road, Tajpur Road, Jamalpur, Sherpur Chowk, GT Road, Sunet, Bhai Randhir Singh (BRS) Nagar, Bhagwan Chowk, Jaimal Road, Gill Road and Nirankari Moahlla.

MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi has also directed the zonal commissioners to go to the field and monitor the situation. In this capacity, MC Deputy Commissioner and Zonal Commissioner for Zone B Neeraj Jain carried out inspections in various areas falling under MC’s Zone B on Monday.

Neeraj Jain said that after clearing the garbage and waste from the GVP points, civic teams have also taken up plantation drives to beautify some of these sites.

MC Deputy Commissioner Inderpal said that under this five-day drive, the GVPs would be cleaned on August 19 and 20. On August 21 and 22, plastic collection and plastic plugging drives would be organised to remove plastic bottles, multi-layered plastic, etc. from the open/green areas. These plastic items would then be taken to MRF plants for recycling.

On August 23, Harit Punjab city compost (wet waste compost) will be distributed free of cost to the residents by organizing camps in different parts of the city. The teams of the city administration will submit a daily report to the senior officers about the activities carried out in their respective areas and this report will then be submitted to the state government.

Meanwhile, MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi said that he, along with senior officials of the civic body, would conduct unannounced inspections to monitor the situation on the ground.

Sandeep Rishi also appealed to the residents to participate in the drive and help the authorities in waste management by not dumping their garbage on waste land/plots. He also requested the residents to dispose of dry and wet garbage separately in the garbage bin.
