Residents of Gothenburg must cope with the boil water order

NORTH PLATTE, Nebraska (KNOP) – A boil water order has been in effect in Gothenburg since Friday, and residents are dealing with the consequences.

The boil water order was issued due to an E.coli outbreak.

According to Gothenburg authorities, the outbreak was caused by the installation of a new water pipe.

This has had a significant impact on schools, businesses and residents of the community.

In Gothenburg, principal Allison Jonas has advised children to bring a packed lunch and their own water bottles. The school district will also provide bottled water for students and staff.

Branch manager Jourdin Shepard explains that supplies were temporarily overloaded and more water bottles than usual had to be kept in stock for the community.

“Demand was very high. We made an extra trip to Hastings the day we found out,” Shepard said. “We loaded more into our truck today to make sure we covered the bases.”

During this time, the city of Gothenburg has come together to support each other despite its own problems.

Gothenburg resident Tinna Therrien explains that her household has been severely affected by this order, especially because her dishwasher no longer works.

“We’ve done it,” Therrien said. “Getting water, sharing water. Making sure everyone has it. Yes, it’s an inconvenience, but nothing we can’t handle.”

The boil water order remains in effect. Gothenburg authorities are currently testing the water and will announce the results on Wednesday or Thursday.

People are advised to boil water for one minute before use and use hand sanitizer after washing hands.
