Family mourns 3-year-old girl who drowned in Hialeah Lake – NBC 6 South Florida

A trip to the park ended in tragedy for a Miami-Dade family this weekend when a three-year-old girl drowned in a lake in Hialeah.

Malaysia Dantzler’s family spoke to NBC6 on Monday while making funeral arrangements.

“A part of me will be lost forever, but I know this is now my personal angel,” said the girl’s grandmother, Latoya Williams.

Family members have now identified the three-year-old girl who drowned in a lake in a Hialeah park on Saturday.

Dantzler was William’s only grandchild. She described the little girl as a lively toddler who was her everything.

“Malaysia is and will always be my everything,” said Williams. “Whether she is here physically or spiritually, she is my everything.”

On Saturday, the toddler was at a birthday party with her godmother at Amelia Earhart Park when she somehow escaped.

Miami-Dade police said the godmother notified park rangers of Dantzler’s disappearance and later found her unconscious in the water. Emergency responders performed CPR on the girl and took her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

“As a family, we’re probably all stuck in the first stage of denial,” said her uncle Nigil Wright. “Did this really happen and is this really something we’re going through?”

Family members said the three-year-old was unable to speak, and they hope their message will include the importance of teaching children with special needs how to use water safely.

Although it is unclear how the child was able to escape from his godmother, Wright explained that it is important for adults to keep an eye on children near water at all times.

“Make sure you keep an eye on your children, whether they’re your children,” he said. “If you’re responsible for them, it’s your responsibility.”

The family will hold a memorial service for Dantzler on Wednesday at the park where the incident occurred. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help the family.
