Trenton Water Works will temporarily supply water to Bordentown

TRENTON – The capital city’s water utility will lend a helping hand to a nearby city as it makes repairs following recent flooding.

Trenton Water Works (TWW) will support the City of Bordentown’s waterworks over the next few months, subject to approval from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), TWW said in a press release Monday.

Mayor Reed Gusciora and Mayor Jennifer L. Sciortino signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formalizing the agreement, which allows operators and engineers of the City of Bordentown Water Utility to maintain system pressure, increase capacity and advance work to replace the flood pumps at the water treatment plant that were damaged by the April flood. The Bordentown Water Utility serves nearly 40,000 residents and includes Bordentown City, Bordentown Township and Fieldsboro.

“Trenton Water Works has the capacity, infrastructure and expertise to provide drinking water to our neighboring communities,” said Gusciora. “TWW is pleased to support the City of Bordentown Water Works in maintaining this vital service to the towns they serve.”

Pursuant to the letter of intent and the plan approved by the NJDEP, the Town of Bordentown Water Management Authority will construct, at the water utility’s expense, a 1,200-foot overland connection from the TWW distribution system in Hamilton Township to the Town of Bordentown Water Management Authority. Field testing has confirmed sufficient flow and pressure to make the connection feasible.

The emergency connection will not impact TWW’s regular customers. TWW will charge the Town of Bordentown Water Company a collective rate for the water it supplies. Bordentown will be responsible, at its own expense, for the construction and maintenance of the interconnector, including operation, monitoring and testing to maintain high water quality.
