Disneyland removes negative stereotypes from Peter Pan’s Flight – Daily Breeze

Walt Disney Imagineering will remove insensitive racial stereotypes and caricatures of Native Americans from “Peter Pan’s Flight” at Disneyland and install a new scene that portrays Tiger Lily and the Never Land Tribe with dignity and cultural authenticity.

The changes to Peter Pan’s Flight in Fantasyland at Disneyland follow recent updates to its sister attraction at the Magic Kingdom in Florida.

According to Disneyland officials, Disneyland plans to update the Neverland Tribe scene in Peter Pan’s Flight with similar changes to those in the Magic Kingdom.

The timing of the changes to Peter Pan’s Flight at Disneyland has yet to be confirmed, according to official Disneyland information.

According to Disneyland officials, Walt Disney Imagineering has a long tradition of making updates and improvements to keep attractions fresh, authentic, relatable and relevant.

A disclaimer on Disney+ that accompanies “Peter Pan” points out the negative and hurtful depictions in the 1953 animated film.

“These stereotypes were wrong then and they are wrong today,” Disney+’s disclaimer states.

The new Never Land Tribe scene in “Peter Pan’s Flight” at the Magic Kingdom theme park near Orlando, Florida, features a harvest festival with audio-animatronic figures of Tiger Lily and her great-grandmother on a spinning turntable, according to Attractions Magazine.

“The change in Orlando is intended to give Tiger Lily more power while also portraying the other members of the tribe with a dignity that was missing in the previous version of the scene,” said Theme Park Insider.

Peter Pan’s Flight returned to Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom on Friday, August 16, after being closed for planned maintenance in July.

In June, Tokyo DisneySea opened a new “Peter Pan’s Neverland” as part of the Fantasy Springs expansion, with a main attraction where visitors must go on a mission to help Peter, Tinker Bell and the lost children save John from Captain Hook and his band of pirates.

“Peter Pan’s Flight” was an opening attraction at the Anaheim theme park in 1955.
