Prosecutor to press charges against man allegedly involved in ACJ inmate’s death, claiming he beat a witness in the case

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – Prosecutors have filed new charges of assault and attempted obstruction of justice against a Fort Wayne man accused of administering fentanyl to an inmate at the Allen County Jail.

Taylor Hunt, 27, is accused of beating a fellow inmate who was supposed to testify against him in a case in which he allegedly gave 27-year-old Steven Perry the fentanyl that caused his death.

BACKGROUND: Two men charged in Allen County Jail death of inmate

The beaten inmate told investigators he was on his way to court before the July 10 beating and was taken to a holding cell, according to an affidavit from Indiana State Police Detective Clint Hetrick. As he walked through the door, Hunt allegedly hit him in the head, knocking him unconscious.

After the inmate hit a metal door frame and landed on a bench in the cell, footage from the cell showed Hunt throwing several more punches before he was restrained by a prison guard, court records show. Hunt could be seen shouting something at the victim, but it was not captured on the video due to the placement of the recording device.

The prisoner suffered a cut above his right eye, which had to be closed with four small bandages.

Allen County Assistant Prosecutor Alix Hall last week requested that three additional charges be added against Hunt: assault, intimidation and attempted obstruction of justice. Hunt has a hearing Thursday where Judge Steven Godfrey of Allen County Superior Court is expected to consider the motion and decide whether to add the new charges.

Hunt’s trial is scheduled to begin on August 27. The other man charged in connection with Perry’s death, 33-year-old Brian Boggs, is scheduled to go on trial in December.

Perry was found unconscious in his prison cell on February 26. Prison and nursing staff attempted to provide him with medical care until emergency services arrived.

Perry, who was awaiting sentencing in a cocaine possession and drug dealing case, was pronounced dead after being taken to Lutheran Hospital.

Witnesses told investigators that Perry gave Boggs and Hunt six bags of chips and cups of noodles in exchange for the fentanyl.

He was the third ACJ inmate to die within four months.

The story continues following our previous coverage.

In January James Robert Shaffer, 33, of Fort Wayne committed suicide while incarcerated in the Allen County Jail.

35-year-old Jonathan Ohlwine also committed suicide in prison.
