Water rescue in Bender Park; Oak Creek firefighters respond

Oak Creek Fire Department officials held a press conference on Monday, August 19, to discuss recent water rescues in Bender Park.

On Sunday, five people were rescued from Lake Michigan in two separate incidents. According to the Oak Creek Fire Department, the first incident occurred at 5:49 p.m. and involved several people in distress in the water at Bender Park. The first fire crews to arrive found three victims on the beach and began patient care. These victims had all been in the water and were recovered before firefighters arrived. Two victims were transported to the hospital for further treatment, and one victim declined treatment.

The second incident occurred approximately one hour later and involved a rowboat that capsized near the We Energies fishing pier. Both people who were on board were found on the rocky shore. One of the victims was able to walk to the We Energies fishing pier with assistance for medical evaluation, but declined further treatment and was not taken to the hospital.

Due to the injuries of the second victim and the cliff bordering the water in that area, the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team (HURT) and the Cudahy Fire Department’s High Angle Rescue Team were deployed to get the person up the cliff.

The second victim was taken to hospital for further examination.

This is an evolving story.
