Dallas Cowboys reportedly sign a defensive end as they continue their efforts to sign more experienced players

Within a matter of hours, the Dallas Cowboys have redesigned the structure of their defensive line.

According to reports from NFL Network and other media outlets, the team agreed to sign defensive end Carl Lawson on Thursday morning after completing a trade with the Giants for nose tackle Jordan Phillips on Wednesday night.

Lawson, 29, played in seven games for the Jets last season and has 27 sacks in seven years in the league. His presence gives the Cowboys experienced depth at the pass rusher position following Sam Williams’ season-ending injury.

With Williams out, Dallas lacked established backup players to cover star defensive ends Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawerence.

Lawson, 29, and Philips, 30, will be the second and third oldest players on the Cowboys’ defensive line when they join the team. Only Lawrence, 33, has more experience than the newcomers.

In Dallas, Lawson will at least see one familiar face. Paul Guenther, the Cowboys’ defensive run game coordinator, was the Bengals’ defensive coordinator in 2017 when Cincinnati drafted Lawson in the first round.

Guenther and Lawson only spent one season together in Cincinnati, but the results are remarkable. Lawson totaled 8.5 sacks that year, which is a career high.
