Can you request the McDonald’s collectible cup you want?

This man attacked a McDonald’s employee just to add to his adult Happy Meal cup collection.

To be clear, owning a collectible is not a reason to get physical with anyone, especially someone who is just doing their job.

McDonald’s Collector’s Meal craze

Officially called “collector meals””, these Happy Meals for adults come with a special edition cup. Depending on the location, the cups have a simple, clear embossed glass design or a colorful, character-filled Landscape on a plastic cup.

Each cup type is available in six different collectible designs featuring old and new McDonald’s collaborations, including Barbie, Beanie Babies, Coca-Cola, Grimace, Hello Kitty and Shrek.

The mugs quickly gained popularity among various fan bases: one group of friends planned a trip to McDonald’s for the occasion, and another woman regretfully broke her McDonald’s boycott just to add another mug to her nostalgic collection.

Three eligible collector’s meals are included in the special edition cup: the Sausage McMuffin with egg, the Big Mac and 10 chicken nuggets.

“These new collectible cups commemorate some of our most memorable designs and global collaborations over the years, allowing longtime fans to relive precious moments and helping a new generation create their own lasting memories,” said Morgan Flatley, Global Chief Marketing Officer and Head of New Business Ventures at McDonald’s in a press release.

The Collectors Meals are available via the app, for consumption on site and in the drive-thru.

McDonalds has been bringing these new types of cups onto the market for decades. The first cup apparently dates back to the 1970s. But there have been controversies over the years. Several cups have been recalled due to lead content.

A customer who is dissatisfied with his collector’s item

In a viral video with more than 5 million views, customer Bryan James (@bryanjames76) filmed an unexpected reaction from another customer who seemed unhappy with the collectible mug he received.

In the video, the man behind the counter near the kitchen (red flag number one) can be seen wrestling and shoving an employee. As he walks away, the man is holding two cups wrapped in blue plastic.

In the background, another worker can be heard saying in Spanish: “Take it away from him, take it away from him.”

We assume that the man already had one of the figurine cups and this time he was given two of them. Instead of politely asking the workers for another cup (which, mind you, is wrapped in plastic so the workers themselves don’t even know what’s inside), he took it by force.

How to get your dream McDonald’s collector’s cup

According to a McDonald’s subreddit for employees, the cups are distributed based on which crate is currently open.

“3 designs per box (based on what the owner stole to show our franchise GMs), generally one box is opened at a time,” one user explained.

Another said that staff generally have a “you get what you get” mentality when it comes to cups, as it would be extremely inefficient to search through the boxes for every dissatisfied collector.

If you want to increase your chances of not becoming a victim of such an incident again, Reddit users recommend visiting different McDonald’s branches at different times of the day.

Viewers had a lot to say in the comments section of James’ video.

“I’m looking for the Shrek Cup,” was one top comment.

“If I order three meals and always get the same cup,” someone agreed.

“I work at McDonald’s and can confirm that we accept all good cups,” added another.

“Right now I only have 3 and 2 repeats. I’ll wait until I find them at flea markets in a few years,” said one viewer.
