Omaha Public Works monitors and may remove traffic signals

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – The Omaha Department of Public Works released a statement Monday announcing that some traffic lights in the Omaha metropolitan area would be monitored and possibly removed.

According to the statement, this is part of a plan to modernize and upgrade the traffic light system to improve safety and efficiency in Omaha.

Since 2017, the city has permanently removed 36 obsolete traffic signals after an on-site evaluation showed that they no longer met certain requirements and demonstrated safe operation during the evaluation period.

During this new round of evaluation, these traffic lights will be turned off and the city will monitor traffic, collect data and review public comments. Sites with satisfactory results during the evaluation will be removed.

The lights to be examined for possible removal:

  • Florence Blvd. and Clark St.
  • Florence Blvd. and Spencer St.
  • 132nd Street and Sky Park Dr.
  • 18th Street and Dodge Street.
  • 18th Street and Douglas Street.
  • 50th Street and Underwood Avenue*
  • 12th Street and Fahey Street*
  • 16th Street and Cass Street*
  • 168th Street and Harney Street.
  • 30th Street and Webster Plz.

Traffic lights marked with an asterisk function as four-way stop lights.

The field test program will run this year from August 9 to October 8. You can submit feedback about the lights to Omaha Public Works through the Keep Omaha Moving website.

By the end of 2024, the project will equip 541 of the city’s nearly 1,000 traffic signals with real-time monitoring capabilities.
