Watch a German Shepherd teach his puppy brother to howl: “Fast learner”

Life just got a lot louder for a Nevada family after their German Shepherd taught his little “brother” how much fun howling can be.

German Shepherd Charlie was filmed teaching seven-month-old puppy Benji how to howl. The video went viral on TikTok, garnering more than 1.1 million views and over 111,000 likes.

Her owner, Sandra, told Newsweek The puppies are “very close to each other and behave as if they were real brothers.”

This was clearly evident in the clip, which showed three-year-old Charlie and puppy Benji chilling on the sofa together, with the younger dog starting to “howl in a weird, growling way,” as Sandra put it.

“Charlie joined in; they started howling after each other,” Sandra said. As Benji’s growling howls fade, Charlie lets out a long, mournful howl before the pup starts howling again in a high pitch. Soon the two are singing a skillful duet.

Sandra wrote in the caption of the video: “GSD (German Shepherd) teaches puppies to howl.”

TikTok users laughed their heads off and flocked to the account @charliethegermanshepherd, where one commented: “He has a German Shepherd accent now when he howls, it’s cute.”

“I’ll start and you join in on the chorus,” posted another, while someone called Benji a quick learner.

One comment read: “This is the best thing I have seen in a long time.”

Sandra, who shared the video on August 11, said they left the dogs with her daughter while they went shopping and the howling started ten minutes later.

When her daughter realized what was happening, “she decided to videotape it, and that’s when Benji came up with the idea of recording the howling.”

The unusual looking puppy is a mix of Chihuahua, Golden Retriever and Dachshund, Sandra from Las Vegas said Newsweek.

It is therefore understandable that Benji starts howling at an early age, as both dachshunds and chihuahuas are considered to be dog breeds with powerful voices.

Both breeds are mentioned in Wag!’s list of the ten most talkative dog breeds, especially the German Shepherd.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes the breed, such as three-year-old Charlie, as family-friendly and good with young children, making the dogs a popular choice as family pets.

In 2023, the German Shepherd ranked fourth on the AKC’s list of most popular dog breeds, behind the French Bulldog, Labrador Retriever, and Golden Retriever.
