General Motors confirmed on Monday that the company will cut more than 1,000 jobs worldwide, including about 600 jobs at its technology campus in Detroit.

At the end of 2023, General Motors employed 76,000 people, meaning these job cuts affect about 1.3% of the total workforce.

In the second quarter of the year, General Motors delivered 696,086 vehicles in the U.S., up slightly by 0.6% year-on-year. Electric vehicle deliveries rose 40% year-on-year to 21,930 units, while total sales in the first half of the year declined slightly – 0.4%.

The layoffs primarily affect the software and service teams; affected employees were notified Monday morning, a GM spokesperson told CNBC.

“As we shape GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold decisions and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact,” the spokesman said.

“As a result, we are reducing certain teams within the software and services organization. We are grateful to everyone who helped build a strong foundation that will position GM to lead in the future,” the spokesperson added.
