GM recalls Buick Envision over flooring issue that could cause accelerator pedal to get stuck

General Motors has issued a recall for 2,450 2024 model year Buick Envision vehicles due to a potentially dangerous issue: The driver-side floor mat could interfere with the accelerator pedal and become stuck in a depressed position. This recall is reminiscent of a similar issue Toyota faced between 2007 and 2011, when floor mats caused unintended acceleration on millions of vehicles.

The issue was reported to GM by a dealer through the company’s Speak Up For Safety program. GM determined that the floor mat design had not been updated to match a driver’s carpet design change for the 2024 model. Although the recall covers 27,793 vehicles produced between September 2023 and July 2024, only 2,450 units are actually affected.

Although there are nine reported complaints about this problem, no accidents have been reported to date. Rather than replacing the floor mats, GM has instructed dealers to modify the existing mats to eliminate the throttle pedal obstruction. Affected owners will be notified starting September 23 and will be reimbursed for the cost of the all-weather floor mats when they return them.

Built in China on the same platform as the Cadillac XT4, the Buick Envision is available for the 2024 model year starting at $35,900 and offers a 2.0-liter turbo engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
