The Hammers and Cherries have only met once before in this competition, in October 1999, when the then third division south coast club lost 2-0 in the third round at the Boleyn Ground.

West Ham are two-time runners-up in the EFL Cup, while Bournemouth’s best performance has been three quarter-final appearances, the last in the 2020/21 season.

Last season, Andoni Iraola’s side reached the fourth round but lost 2-1 to Liverpool, while the Hammers’ run was ended by the same team at Anfield one round later.

Now Iraola is set to face fellow Basque Julen Lopetegui for the first time on these shores. The last time the two faced each other was in 2022, when the Hammers head coach was at Sevilla and his counterpart was coaching Rayo Vallecano.
