ProtonVPN opens browser extension feature to free users

ProtonVPN continues its product improvements and feature additions for user convenience and recently made another useful announcement. Specifically, users of the free version of ProtonVPN can now use the VPN’s web browser extension on their devices.

The ProtonVPN browser extension is now available in the free plan

As worked out in its recent post, ProtonVPN is now offering its web browser extension to free VPN users. This means that any ProtonVPN user can download the extension like any other browser add-on and protect browser traffic without paying anything.

Previously, ProtonVPN’s browser extension was a paid feature. Although the service offered browser extensions alongside dedicated VPN clients for various devices, only premium users could download the add-on to their devices.

For free users, ProtonVPN offers a VPN client for desktop and mobile with some limited features and unlimited data usage. Although this free account feature allowed users to protect their browsing sessions, it somewhat hindered their routine activities, especially for those who did not need to protect all of their device’s traffic.

But now, with the web browser extensions, users of the free ProtonVPN can simply install and run the VPN add-on to secure their browsing sessions without affecting the other apps on their devices.

The add-on is available for all Chromium-based browsers, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Brave and Vivaldi, as well as Mozilla Firefox and related browsers such as LibreWolf and Waterfox.

Using the browser extension is easy. Users just need to download the extension from the respective browser’s extension library or from ProtonVPN’s official website. Then, users need to log in to their ProtonVPN account via the browser add-on to activate the VPN.

The ProtonVPN Android app can be used without an account

Before this major privacy move, ProtonVPN also made other notable updates to its Android app. As of July 2024, ProtonVPN allows Android users to run the VPN on their devices without having to create an account, as announced through their official XAccount.

In addition, ProtonVPN has also recently introduced other feature enhancements to the Android app, such as the introduction of discrete app icons and the Stealth protocol.
