Two separate water rescues in about an hour near Bender Park brought three

OAK CREEK, Wis. – Two separate water rescues occurred about an hour apart, three required hospitalization, and all occurred near Bender Park in Oak Creek Sunday evening.

The first rescue involved five victims in Bender Park at around 5:50 p.m. The first three were out of the water before Oak Creek Fire Department arrived and were treated on the beach. However, two other victims were still in the water and required assistance.

Both victims were taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries, but one of the victims refused treatment.

The second water rescue occurred about an hour later when a rowboat capsized and threw two victims into Lake Michigan. When the OCFD found the victims, both were on the rocky shore near the WE Energies Fishing Pier.

One of the victims was able to walk but required assistance from authorities and was examined by paramedics on site. The victim refused treatment and was not taken to hospital.

Due to the other victim’s injuries, the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team (HURT) attempted to use heavy equipment to lift the victim up the cliff just beyond the rocky shore. He was then transported to the hospital for treatment.

The OCFD received assistance from MFD HURT and dive rescue teams, a rescue boat, and paramedics from the South Milwaukee Fire Department, Franklin Fire Department, Cudahy Fire Department, Oak Creek Police Department, and the United States Coast Guard.

The incidents are being investigated.
