More student accommodation planned for former police station in Stoke-on-Trent | Local News | News | Stoke Nub News

Further student accommodation is planned in a former police station in Stoke-on-Trent.

Planning permission has already been granted to convert Hanley Police Station on Bethesda Street into 161 student accommodation units, but a new application has been submitted to provide 218 units.

The application concerns the “change of use and extension of the former police station into 218 student dormitories, the associated new cladding of the external facades, the addition of two floors to the north and east facades as well as associated work and landscaping”.

A building permit for 161 student dormitories has already been granted for the site (Hewitt & Carr Architects).

If approved, 24 apartments would be built in the basement, 47 apartments on the ground floor and 49 apartments on the first, second and third floors.

The basement would also house amenities such as a lounge, gym and laundry room.

A design and access statement said: “Externally, the tired facade will be enhanced with more attractive brickwork, using lighter, tawny bricks laid in a traditional manner, with the same bricks laid vertically in horizontal strips, preferably between the top of the lintel and the floor. Window sills will be lowered to floor level on each floor. There will also be an alternation of traditional windows with chamfered brickwork and modern ‘box’ style windows projecting from the facade.”

Work on the new development began in March (Nub News).

A decision on these plans is expected in the coming months; the full planning application can be viewed here.
