Fifth Sawan Somwar 2024: Sawan Somwar has great religious significance among Hindus. The Sawan month itself has immense significance. This day is dedicated God Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On this auspicious day, the devotees fast and pray to Lord Shiva with great devotion and devotion. Today is the fifth and the most recently Sawan Somwar falls on Purnima Tithi, i.e. on 19 August 2024.
Sawan Somwar 2024: Meaning
For Hindus, Sawan Somwar is very important both spiritually and religiously. This day is revered as the holiest and devotees observe a strict fast from sunrise to sunset on this auspicious day. Sawan began on 22nd July and culminates today with Raksha Bandhan and Purnima Tithi, i.e. 19th August 2024. This is the last Shravan Somwar when people can observe this fast with great devotion and please Lord Shiva. In Hinduism, the month of Sawan is sacred. Sawan is an important month for Mahadev worship and seeking blessings. Hindus also consider the Mondays of this month significant and they visit Shiva temples and perform abhishekam to Shivalingam to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings. It is believed that devotees who offer puja to Lord Shiva on this day are blessed with good fortune, prosperity and fulfillment of all their wishes.
Sawan Somwar 2024: Puja rituals
1. Fasting
On this auspicious day, devotees fast from sunrise to sunset on every Sawan Somwar with great fervor and devotion. They abstain from eating food or even from tamasic foods. These people break their night fast.
2. Abhishekam
It is customary to bathe Lord Shiva in Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee and powdered sugar) and other sacred substances like sugarcane juice and sandalwood paste. These things help in purifying the body, mind and soul.
3. Chanting mantras
Various mantras of Lord Shiva, including the mantras Maha Mrityunjaya and Panchakshari, must be chanted by the devotees.
4. Offers
Offerings to Lord Shiva include lighting diyas with desi ghee, offering flowers, incense sticks and bilva patras.
5. Recite Katha
Devotees recite Sawam Somwar Katha before breaking their fast in the evening.
6. Bhajan
Many people participate in various spiritual and religious activities such as singing hymns, prayers and bhajan kirtan.
