11-year-old girl begs for her mother’s funeral expenses in Telangana

ADILABAD: In a poignant incident, 11-year-old girl Meera Durga begged the public for money towards the funeral expenses of her mother, who committed suicide in Bheltharoda village, Thanoor mandal in Nirmal district on Sunday. Durga’s father had died 12 years ago, leaving her mother without any financial support.

Durga, a student of class 6, was confused as to how she would perform her mother’s last rites without money. When the local police, teachers and BRS principal came to know about her plight, they intervened to give the girl money and help her perform her mother’s last rites by the evening.

According to police, M Gangamani (35), Durga’s mother, hanged herself from a ceiling fan in Bheltharoda on Saturday night. Gangamani was a daily wage labourer in agriculture and had to struggle hard to pay her rent and other financial needs while raising her only daughter.

According to police, Gangamani had an argument with Durga before she went to her mother’s elder sister’s house. When the girl returned, she found her mother’s body and alerted the neighbours, who then called the police. Unsure of what to do next, Meera placed her mother’s body in front of her house and asked the villagers for help.

Knowing the dire situation, the Mudhole District Police officials donated Rs 8,000 while local BRS leaders Kiran Komewar and others donated Rs 10,000 following the instructions of BRS Chairman KT Rama Rao. Rama Rao also assured the girl of further help.
