Dr. Tatcho Mindiola Jr., former director of UH CMALS and sociology professor, dies

HOUSTON – The University of Houston’s Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies confirmed Sunday the death of the program’s former director, Dr. Tatcho Mindiola Jr.

Mindiola was 85 years old.

The center released the following statement on his death:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Tatcho Mindiola Jr., a leader whose vision, dedication and unwavering commitment left an indelible mark on the University of Houston, the CMALS community and all who were fortunate to know and work with him. His leadership inspired us to strive for excellence and to believe in the power of unity and purpose. Dr. Mindiola’s legacy will continue to inspire us as we carry on the mission he so passionately championed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and all those whose lives were touched by his remarkable life.”

Mindiola He retired as director of CMALS in 2015. During his time at the University of Houston, he was also a professor of sociology and was responsible for numerous publications. He also received numerous awards and honors for his work.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire also released a statement following the news of Mindiola’s death:

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Tatcho Mindiola. He was a trailblazer who paved the way for many of today’s Hispanic leaders. He taught and led students to make a difference and be proud of their heritage. He made me a better senator; I will miss his advice and friendship as Mayor of Houston. He made a difference and is an icon in the Hispanic community.”
