A family gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday – just as Hurricane Ernesto hit Bermuda.

Sarai Bailey was born at 8 a.m. to proud parents Stephanie and Keenan Bailey.

She is the new sister of her 18-month-old brother Kaden.

A spokeswoman for the Bermuda Hospitals Board said the couple were at home when Ms Bailey went into labour at around 4am, four days before Sarai’s due date.

Ms Bailey said that despite their proximity to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, the family had found it difficult to reach the emergency department due to road closures.

She explained: “Fortunately, the contracts started just as the eye of Hurricane Ernesto came over, so the winds had already died down.

“We live close to the hospital, but to get there we had to cross roads that were blocked by trees.”

Mrs Bailey added: “I was surprised at how quickly Sarai was born. Only four hours after labour began.”

In fact, Sarai came so quickly that Mr. Bailey missed her delivery.

He said, “Sarai was here before I even got back to the hospital after I dropped Kaden off at my mom’s. When I got back, Sarai was here.”

Mr. Bailey was unable to stay at the hospital as it was still on lockdown due to the storm and the second half of Ernesto was approaching.

But on Saturday evening he was able to return and spend time with his wife and daughter.
