All three Cal Golf graduates advance to the FedEx Cup playoffs

All three former Cal golfers have made it to the second weekend of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Collin Morikawa, Byeong Hun An and Max Homa are all heading to Denver.

After the final round of the St. Jude Championships in Memphis on Sunday, they were among the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup points standings and qualified for next week’s BMW Championships.

From there, the top 30 in the rankings will earn places at the Tour Championship in Atlanta a week later, where the winner will take home $25 million.

Morikawa played his best round of the week, shooting a 67 (3 under par), finishing 6-under and tied for 22nd in the 70-player event at TPC Southwind.

The 27-year-old graduate of California State University began the week in fourth place in the points table and will remain in that position heading to Denver.

An, 32, shot 1 under par and finished four rounds at or under par. The South Korean, who played at Cal for a year before turning pro, had five birdies and four bogeys to finish tied for 33rd at minus-4 for the week.

Before he began playing in Memphis, An was ranked 12th in the FedEx Cup standings and the PGA Tour projects him to finish 15th.

Even 33-year-old Homa, whose week was marked by an 8-over 78 in the second round, managed to get in. Homa finished last at plus-11 despite shooting an even-par 70 in the final round.

But the PGA’s FedEx Cup placing predictions put Homa – who was ranked 35th at the start of the week – at 43rd, earning him a ticket to Denver.

In addition to invitations to the BMW tournament next week, the top 50 in the overall ranking after Sunday secured places in all eight signature events of 2025 with high prize money.

Hideki Matsuyama, who led by five shots before Sunday’s final round, was one shot behind after a double bogey on the 15th hole. But he made a 26-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and another birdie on the 18th to finish with a score of 70 and a two-shot lead over Xander Schauffele and reigning FedEx champion Viktor Hovland.

With his victory, Matsuyama was able to climb five places to third place in the FedEx Cup standings.

Schauffele shot a bogey-free 63 and briefly led in the final round, maintaining his second place in the overall standings.

World number one Scottie Scheffler finished fourth with minus 14 after a 66 and retains his place at the top of the FedEx Cup standings.

Nick Dunlap, the youngest player in the field at 20, started the week ranked 67th in the FedEx Cup standings and secured 48th place when he shot a par on the 18th hole to finish fifth at 13 under par.
