On Sunday, another murder case was filed against Bangladesh’s deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over the deaths of two college students during the country’s recent anti-quota protests.

It was the latest in a series of cases against the 76-year-old former prime minister, who resigned on August 5 after massive student protests against a controversial quota system for government jobs and fled to India.

Hasina and 12 others have been charged with the killing of two students in Dhaka’s Sutrapur district during the violence that led to her overthrow.

The application was filed in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Torikul Islam in connection with the killing of Kobi Nazrul Govt College student Ikram Hossain Kawser and Shaheed Suhrawardi College student Omar Faruk, state-run news agency BSS reported.

The two students were gunned down in separate incidents by police and Awami League supporters as they protested along with hundreds of others outside Kobi Nazrul Govt College and Shaheed Suhrawardi College on July 19.

This means that there are twelve cases pending against Hasina, including nine for murder, one for kidnapping and two for crimes against humanity and genocide in Bangladesh.

More than 230 people were killed in the violence that erupted across the country following the fall of the Hasina-led Awami League government, bringing the death toll to over 600 since the massive student protests began in mid-July.

Other accused in the case include Awami League general secretary and former minister Obaidul Quader, Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud and former education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel, news portal bdnews24.com reported.

Others named in the case included former Minister of State for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Deputy Inspector General of Dhaka Range Syed Nurul Islam, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DB chief Harunor Rashid, Additional Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar and DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman.

Another 200 to 250 unnamed people, including leaders and activists of the Awami League and its front organizations, have been charged in the case, the report said.

After the fall of the Hasina regime, an interim government was formed and 84-year-old Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus was appointed chief adviser.
