“Team Cherry is still cooking” – Geoff Keighley wants you to know not to expect Hollow Knight: Silksong live on Gamescom opening night

Expecting to see Hollow Knight: Silksong at Gamescom Opening Night Live? You definitely shouldn’t, unless Geoff Keighley is lying to us.

With every single game presentation announced, there’s always one game to spot in the responses: Hollow Knight: Silksong. This is no surprise, as fans have been clamoring for a release date since its reveal as a standalone title in 2019, and there haven’t been that many updates from Team Cherry since then. In 2022, it was at least confirmed that it would be coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one, and in 2023, Xbox’s official Twitter account far too confidently claimed it would be coming in the same year. Many presentations later, we’re now well over halfway through 2024, and there’s still no indication of when it might come out – but of course, that hasn’t stopped fans from asking if it will be featured at Gamescom Opening Night Live next week. The answer? No.

Yesterday, Game Awards host Geoff Keighley said on his personal Twitter account: “Just to get this out of the way: No Silksong on Tuesday at ONL. Team Cherry is still cooking.” This will obviously be disappointing for fans who somehow convinced themselves it was the right thing to do, but honestly it feels pretty normal at this point when it comes to Silksong. Honestly, it will come out when it comes out, and there are too many games out there all the time these days anyway, so just play something else while you wait, OK?

This isn’t the first time Keighley has had to raise expectations for one of his shows. Before Summer Game Fest, Keighley made it clear that titles like Kingdom Hearts 4, which is currently somewhat lacking, wouldn’t be included (but he didn’t do that for Gamescom ONL, so let’s prepare for disappointment, Kingdom Hearts fans).

However, the host did put together a list of games you can expect to see during ONL, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Little Nightmares 3, and Monster Hunter Wilds, as well as “lots of new game announcements, surprises, and special guests.” We’ll see, Geoff. We’ll see.
