Kelly Dillon of 1010 WINS attacked in random street attack in New York

According to police and the victim, a madman grabbed a 1010 WINS journalist by the hair and threw her to the ground in front of her Manhattan office in a random, senseless action.

Kelly Dillon, 40, a veteran New York City news and traffic reporter who was also at WCBS 880, recounted the sudden attack in a TikTok video Saturday, describing how she was “randomly attacked by a man on the streets of New York City” shortly after midnight Wednesday.

“There’s a lot of crime being committed against women on the streets – random acts, random attacks,” Dillon said. “It’s not stopping and it’s not getting better. And it’s getting much, much worse. And the media and the police are definitely downplaying it. It’s a huge, huge problem.”

For Dillon, the ordeal began when she left her Hudson Street office building after completing her final report for the night and headed home to New Jersey, she said.

“The area is pretty deserted at night, it’s a quiet area,” she said in the video. “I’m always on guard when I’m walking alone in the city as a young woman.”

She said she was crossing the street when she heard someone speeding behind her near the intersection of Hudson and King Streets.

“I looked over and out of the corner of my eye I saw what looked like a man,” she said. “It looked like he was jogging. I just thought someone jogging at midnight is really not unusual in New York City.”

She moved aside to let the runner pass – but then she felt someone grab “a good portion of my hair” and throw it into a concrete flowerpot, according to Dillon and police sources.

“They grabbed my hair so hard and then literally threw me to the sidewalk,” Dillon said. “It happened so, so fast.”

She jumped up again – a reaction she attributed to a rush of adrenaline – and watched the creep run down the street.

“I was in shock,” she said. “I just started screaming for help … and a large group of different people heard me and came running to help me.”

Several passersby and other Good Samaritans helped her with her injuries while others went after the attacker, she said.

“I was just overwhelmed that there are good people out there willing to step in and help,” Dillon said. “Because I know there are reports of women being attacked and no one helping them.”

“I’m so happy and grateful that there was help and people were willing to step in and help someone in a very scary situation,” she continued. “I can’t thank these wonderful souls enough.”

When police arrived, she told them her story, describing her masked attacker as a “short, thin” man who was “obviously in good shape.”

The police were “very friendly and very serious and seemed unfazed,” she said.

“I’m not shocked because this type of crime is the new norm in New York City,” Dillon said. “It just seemed like another day, another attack. That was the energy I felt.”

Paramedics took her to the hospital, where doctors tended to her wounds, including a concussion and a “gaping hole” in her elbow that went down to the bone.

She said some of the Good Samaritans told her that about 20 minutes later, just around the corner, another woman was randomly punched in the face, and police confirmed the second attack to The Washington Post.

It is unclear whether the second attack was connected to Dillon’s or was carried out by the same perpetrator, police said.

The reporter said she was telling her story because she wanted people with similar experiences to come forward and talk.

“I’m calling out: If you find this video and you’re a woman and you’ve been attacked or assaulted on the streets of New York City…please reach out to me,” Dillon said. “Please contact me. I want to start telling these stories.”

Dillon added that she believes city officials are trying to cover up the recent violence. She believes the violence is more widespread than people realize and is being perpetrated by an organized group of men who are feuding with women.

“They’re absolutely trying to downplay this,” Dillon said of the city. “It can’t be downplayed. The streets aren’t safe for women right now, or for anyone, frankly. But especially for women. This seemed very deliberate and planned.”

Dillon said she is slowly recovering from the shocking attack.

“I can’t move my arm. It’s still healing,” she said. “It’s pretty painful. And of course the whole body is in tremendous pain from the impact with the asphalt and the trauma, the whole situation.”

“Physically, I’m still recovering. But I’ll be fine,” she said.

“It could have been much worse.”
