Celtic vs Hibernian: Scottish League Cup – BBC Sport

Celtic have started the season with confidence, which is a bad omen for everyone else. In the first half hour they threatened to sweep Hibs off the pitch.

A combination of fierce pressure, quick passes and sharp advances had the home fans at Celtic Park purring.

At first, the improving Kuhn kept his width and played to Hatate, who passed across to Maeda, who scored cleanly.

Then Kuhn’s chipping allowed Maeda to shoot past Bursik. It was the blueprint for how Brendan Rodgers wants his team to play.

What is frustrating for the Northern Irishman, however, is that a single mistake allowed Hibs to get back into the game and that there was also some waste in front of goal.

Yet despite the lack of new faces, they look well placed to win another domestic treble. The question remains, however, whether they will strengthen even further to play a stronger role in the new-look Champions League.

Meanwhile, Hibs were told by new head coach Gray that they should be “far better” than they were a week ago at Easter Road.

They lasted just another 65 seconds without conceding a goal. The switch to a back three made little difference as they were under pressure for most of the first half.

However, Kuharevich’s header was excellent and after that Hibs looked even more threatening as they went more direct and looked to physically unbalance Celtic.

However, this was ruined by Ekpiteta’s terrible mistake, which added to the defender’s ever-growing list of errors already at this point in the season.

It’s early days, but Hibs don’t seem to have the personnel to play from the back and it’s unclear how Gray envisages his team performing.

However, with nine new faces in the squad and potentially more to come, this could be a slow process for the Hibs boss and he should not be judged too early after two games in a row against Celtic.
