Teenager admits shooting girl after she refused to give out her phone number

Dothan police arrested a 17-year-old boy Friday night after he allegedly shot a girl because she refused to give him her phone number.

Police responded to Solomon Park on Choctaw Street at 7:30 p.m. after shots were fired. They stopped a car with several juveniles inside and found firearms in the vehicle and empty shell casings in the park.

The criminal police identified one of the youths as a suspect and questioned him.

“According to witnesses and the suspect, the suspect, a 17-year-old male, was angry with the victim because she had not given him her phone number earlier in the day at school,” police said in a statement. “At Solomon Park, the suspect saw the victim with her boyfriend and opened fire with a 9mm handgun.”

The teenager was arrested and charged as an adult with two counts of attempted first-degree assault and was booked into the Houston County Jail.

Police said they take such behavior “very seriously” but did not release the suspect’s name or mugshot.
