NY Jets rookie was “by far the most productive player,” says Saleh

Brandon Codrington made a statement during the New York Jets’ 15-12 preseason win over the Carolina Panthers.

The Raleigh native put on a great show for his friends and family during the Jets’ second preseason game. Codrington had a 63-yard kickoff return early in the second half and also had a 31-yard punt return.

The defensive back from North Carolina Central signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in May. Codrington was a standout on special teams throughout his college career, scoring three punt return touchdowns and one kickoff return touchdown.

The chances of Codrington making the roster were slim from the start. However, due to new kickoff rules, NFL teams must use two kick returners in the “landing zone.” So if Codrington continues to show promise as a kick returner during the Jets’ remaining practices and final preseason game, he could have a chance to make the Jets’ roster.

“(He) definitely took advantage of his opportunities,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said. “I think he was the most productive (player) for both teams. He set up a couple of scoring drives. That’s what he’s here for. That’s why we brought him in, his punt return and kick return skills. I thought he did a really good job today.”

When asked about his path to the Jets’ 53-man roster, Codrington said, “I try to make the most of my opportunity. I make sure I do my best every time I step on the field and I have no regrets. If I mess up, I make sure I fly around.”
