The greatest Hollywood actor in real life is not who you think he is

The tallest actor in Hollywood is a title that changes quite frequently based on box office numbers and star power… but that definition of the word “tallest” is not actually what we are discussing here today. In this sense, “big” or “biggest” is meant metaphorically, imagining that a performer’s weight in the industry is far above that of his contemporaries. What we are focusing on in this article is the the greatest actors in Hollywood. For example, who is the greatest actor; the actor who literally towers above his contemporaries.

Hollywood is full of enormously tall people. For every little king like Daniel Radcliffe, there’s a John Corbett or a Joe Mangianello, both of whom are 6’5″. So which actors are on the proverbial Mount Rushmore of big, tall guys in the industry? (Although this list is all men, it should be noted that super-tall actresses like Gwendoline Christie – who is 6’3″ – are also a fixture on screen.) Who are the five tallest guys in Hollywood, and does their height have anything to do with their success?

5. Alexander Skarsgard (6’4)

Alexander Skärsgard stands at 6’4″, which is clearly at the bottom of this list – although that height is nothing to sneeze at. This Swedish giant made his film debut in 2001 with a small role in Zoolander, and really hit his stride in 2008 when he joined the cast of HBO’s steamy vampire series True Blood as the scheming old vampire Eric Northman. After that series ended in 2014, Skärsgard continued working with HBO, taking his career to new heights. From 2017 to 2019, the actor played Perry Wright – the rich and abusive husband of Nicole Kidman’s Celeste Wright – in the premium channel’s big-budget darling Big Little Lies, which earned Skärsgard his first Emmy nomination. And win; In 2021, Skärsgard joined the cast of Succession. In the series’ fourth and final season, Skärsgard played the enigmatic tech billionaire Lukas Matsson and held his own brilliantly against the Emmy-winning series’ ensemble.

Skärsgard is an incredibly talented and versatile artist, but his enormous size injured; his presence on screen is imposing and gives a certain weight to every character he plays. Although he is not the highest-grossing actor on this list, he is one of the most appreciated by critics and audiences thanks to his work in several prestigious television shows… and, to reiterate, he is extremely, enormously large.

4. Dwayne The Rock Johnson (1.93m)

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had a successful career as a wrestler – thanks in large part to his impressive and enormous physique – before switching to acting. Since making his big screen debut in 2001’s The Mummy Returns, he’s made a name for himself as one of Hollywood’s tallest and most successful actors. Johnson and his 6’4″ frame have appeared in many major films, but Johnson is most likely best known for his role as Luke Hobbs in the Fast & Furious franchise, which happens to be one of the highest-grossing franchises in film history. Johnson has appeared in animated films (“Moana” and its upcoming sequel), comic book adaptations (“Black Adam”), and comedies (“The Other Guys,” “Central Intelligence”), and his massive size is certainly a huge plus for his star status.

All in all, Johnson is one of the highest-grossing actors in the entire entertainment industry; his films have grossed over $5 billion at the box office over the course of his entire career. That’s not Only because he’s a big, burly kid. Like Alexander Skärsgard, it certainly doesn’t hurt though… and his size is probably a big part of Johnson’s status as a reliable action star.

3. Vince Vaughn

At 6’5″, Vince Vaughn is one of the funniest people in Hollywood – and he’s also a damn giant. The star, who began his career in projects like “Rudy” and “Swingers” before starring in “frat pack” films like “Old School,” “Dodgeball” and “Wedding Crashers,” is a particularly tall guy, and while he rarely plays imposing characters, his size can add a strange lightness to some absurd situations. (For example, the absolutely wild height difference between Vaughn and his on-screen love in “Wedding Crashers,” played by the petite Isla Fisher, makes much of their romance unintentionally comical.)

All in all, Vaughn is a pretty solid fixture in the entertainment industry. In addition to comedies, he’s also appeared in dramas like “Hacksaw Ridge” and the thriller “Seberg,” but he also shows off his sense of humor quite often in projects like “Cut It, Larry!” or the comedy “Queenpins.” The next time you see Vaughn on screen, pay attention to how tall he is – and how he uses his enormous size to make simple scenes funnier through his physicality alone.

2. James Cromwell

James Cromwell is not a great action star. He has never played a sexy vampire. He is not exactly known for his irreverent yet silly comedies. What Cromwell Isis however very large; he stands an impressive 6′ 7″. According to an interview with The Guardian, even his father – actor John Cromwell – told him that his height would hinder his career. Cromwell revealed that he left college to become an actor, musing: “That was the last thing my father wanted. He said, ‘Don’t be an actor. You’re too bloody tall.’ I thought, ‘I guess I’ll have to be a director.’ I tried unsuccessfully to become a theater director for 10 years, but got acting jobs.”

Fortunately for audiences around the world, Cromwell’s father was dead wrong—and the younger Cromwell is one of the most recognizable character actors in the entire entertainment industry. On both the big and small screen, Cromwell has appeared in everything from Babe (which, amazingly, earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor) to LA Confidential and The Green Mile to Spider-Man 3 and American Horror Story: Asylum, and fans of Succession likely remember his Emmy-nominated turn as Ewan Roy. Cromwell’s height certainly hasn’t gotten in the way of his success; it may even have helped Cromwell become one of the most sought-after performers in Hollywood over the course of his long career.

1. Brad Garrett

There are many enormously tall actors in Hollywood, and many who are well over 6 feet tall. Very few reach the literal height of Everybody Loves Raymond star Brad Garrett, who stands 6 feet 0 inches tall. Anyone who has seen Everybody Loves Raymond probably remembers how Garrett – who won three Emmy Awards for his role as Robert Barone on the show – towered over his co-stars, even dwarfing star Ray Romano, who is 6 feet 2 inches tall. Garrett starred in the popular sitcom from 1996 to 2005, but he has many other credits to his name.

In the years following Everybody Loves Raymond, Garrett lent his distinctive gravelly voice to Ratatouille (his second collaboration with Pixar, after also voicing the puffer fish Bloat in 2003’s Finding Nemo), played an Easter Island head in several Night at the Museum films, and also appeared in short-lived comedies like I’m Dying Up Here, Single Parents, and Not Dead Yet. Garrett’s height is definitely a topic of conversation, but it somehow doesn’t define him as an actor; he even once played Jackie Gleason in a made-for-TV movie, even though Gleason was only 5’10”. Aside from deceased actors like Peter Mayhew and Andre the Giant, Garrett probably holds the title of tallest man in Hollywood; congratulations to him.
