Wisconsin police have shot and killed a middle school student who brought a gun to the campus in Mount Horeb, Dane County.

The Mount Horeb Area School District was placed on lockdown on Wednesday, May 1, because of a report of “someone with a gun in front of the middle school,” the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said in a press release.

“Police officers responded to the threat and used deadly force,” the press release continued. The person was a student from the school district.

According to Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR), the student was 14 years old.

Officials also said the incident occurred outdoors and that the student with the weapon “never gained access to the school buildings.” Police added that other than the student who brought the weapon onto campus, no one else at the school was “physically injured.”

Authorities said that “no police officers were injured” in the incident and that everyone “wore body cameras.”

The middle school first announced the threat on Facebook around 11:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, writing: “Community members, there was an active shooter at our middle school this morning. The perpetrator did not enter through the entrance. Police are assisting in scouting our building to ensure the safety of our students and staff.”

Shortly after the first post, the school confirmed that the threat had been “neutralized outside the building.” In a subsequent post, it added, according to ABC News, “An initial search of the middle school has revealed no additional suspects. Equally important, we have received no reports of personal injury, with the exception of the alleged attacker.”

In a press conference, Attorney General Josh Kaul confirmed that the student had been fatally shot with the weapon, according to CNN and WPR, but did not provide further details, such as whether gunfire had occurred between the student and police.

Steve Salerno, superintendent of the Mount Horeb Area School District, emphasized during the press conference the importance of existing security systems such as locked entrance doors that the school district already had in place.

“If there is a story to tell today, it is the story of a great team that came together to support our wonderful children,” Salerno said, according to CNN and ABC News. “This could have been a far worse tragedy.”

The school district was closed on Thursday, May 2, WPR reported. The school district said in a social media post that it is “carefully planning the coming days” and will notify parents of a new schedule.
