A local resident said he rushed outside after hearing “screams” coming from his 11th-floor apartment shortly after the accident that killed a young girl. The tragedy has prompted a shaken Mohammed Ibrahim to call for new road safety measures in his area.

The fatal accident occurred on Sunday 14 April at around 9.45pm on Upper Highgate Street in Highgate. According to police, a silver Corsa struck pedestrians, including a four-year-old girl who died.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drink or drugs. Mr Ibrahim, who lives in Wilmcote Tower, just yards from the scene of the accident, said last night’s tragedy was “very sad”.

The 36-year-old called for speed bumps to be installed on Upper Highgate Street, which he described as “dangerous”. He told BirminghamLive: “It was about 9.35 or 9.40pm when a family of four tried to cross the road and were then hit by a car.”

He pointed to a broken metal fence in front of the high-rise and added: “The car drove through there and then the police came. We went outside immediately.”

“I live on the 11th floor. When we heard voices and screams, we went downstairs and realized that something had happened here. It’s very sad. We need speed bumps on this street. It’s very dangerous.”

An 87-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous, agreed with Mr Ibrahim. She said: “I live in the flats here (Wilmcote Tower). I have almost been run over three times. Instead of going up, they come down this side street near us.”

“I’m 87. I’ve been crossing Upper Highgate Street for a long time. Once a driver came the wrong way and almost hit me. It can be really scary.”

Del, who also lives in the high-rise, told us on site: “It’s terrible. I’ve only just woken up and I’m off work today. If something bad happens here, it doesn’t shock you. A lot of things happen here.”

A group of teachers from a nearby school gathered at the scene of the accident this afternoon. Visibly moved, they remained silent at the tragic spot for several minutes before moving on.

Two police officers were seen conducting door-to-door enquiries in the area. Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes added: “A young girl has tragically lost her life and I can only imagine the pain her loved ones must be going through at this terrible time.”

“This is deeply upsetting for everyone and we will do everything we can to support them and get answers as to exactly what happened last night. We urgently need to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and can assist us with our enquiries. We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who has dashcam footage.

“This is the beginning of our investigation and I would urge people not to speculate about the circumstances. We need to get to the facts so we can conduct a thorough investigation and provide the answers the girl’s family and friends deserve.”
