Waters wins race two, Randle and Feeney collide

Cam Waters built on his solid performance from Saturday to win the 18th and final sprint race of the 2024 Supercars season at Symmons Plains on Sunday.

The driver of the Tickford Ford Mustang started second and benefited from a mistake by his teammate Thomas Randle on the first lap when Randle, who had become the ninth polesitter of the 2024 season earlier in the day, made a small mistake at Turn 4 and let Waters through.

That was the only advantage he needed, especially when a safety car came out on lap seven and Randle had to wait for his tires, losing a place to Will Brown (Triple Eight Chevrolet Camaro).

“I am so happy about the win,” said Waters after his victory in 6.34 seconds.

“Tommy made a small mistake in turn 4, which is a shame for him. I just tried to keep the gap, I don’t know what happened. We weren’t good with the Super Soft (tyre) and yesterday I didn’t use it optimally.”

Brown, who started the race from fourth place, was pressured by Randle in the second half of the race and the two cars touched twice, causing Randle to drop to fourth place, which Broc Feeney (Triple Eight) took advantage of.

With five laps to go, Randle spun Feeney in Turn 4 and the two fell to sixth and 16th place. However, a 15-second penalty dropped Randle even further to a modest 18th place.

Randle was very disappointed after the race and went to the Triple Eight pits to apologise to Feeney for the collision, but team manager Mark Dutton refused to let him in.

“I overestimated the grip in Turn 4,” Randle admitted. “I’m devastated by what happened towards the end of the race. It was my fault. It doesn’t feel real that it happened.”

Third place and his first podium of the season went to Bryce Fullwood’s Brad Jones Racing Chevrolet, which took advantage of the chaos in front of it while showing consistent speed and favorable tire wear.

Starting 11th, Chaz Mostert quickly worked his way through the field to finish fourth in the Walkinshaw Andretti United Ford. He missed the final part of qualifying by 0.04 seconds, but his Mustang once again showed real racing pace in the 55-lap race.

Jack Le Brocq finished fifth on a difficult day for Erebus Motorsport, ahead of Andre Heimgartner (Brad Jones Racing Chevrolet) and another driver who recovered strongly in the race, Nick Percat. The Saturday race winner started from 24th and last place in the Matt Stone Racing Chevrolet after a qualifying mistake, but drove through the field and stayed error-free to finish seventh.

This means that Brown now has an 81-point lead in the championship, 1980 points compared to Mostert’s 1899. Feeney is in third place with 1782 points, ahead of Waters (1630), Matt Payne (1419) and Percat (1368).

“I had a flat right front tire on the first lap and it hurt towards the end,” said Brown after extending his championship lead.

“It’s annoying for Broc, but it’s great to be back on the podium. For Cam, it just wasn’t enough today.”

After the last sprint race of the season, the teams now turn their attention to the first endurance race with two drivers, the Sandown 500 on 14 and 15 September.
