HALF-TIME REPORT: Aston Martin – Can Aston Martin get back into the race after a cautious start?

Best moment

Given how quickly the season has progressed, it’s easy to forget that Alonso started a Grand Prix from third on the grid earlier this year, and the two-time world champion endured arguably his toughest weekend yet at the Shanghai International Circuit.

After qualifying in third place for the sprint and battling for a place in the top three until colliding with Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari, Alonso secured another starting position on the second row for the Grand Prix itself, giving Aston Martin a rare highlight in the 14 laps to date.

Aside from that, the team also picked up a morale-boosting double points finish at the Canadian Grand Prix, with Alonso finishing sixth and Stroll seventh in a dramatic, rain-affected race – their best combined result of the year.

Worst moment

One of Aston Martin’s worst moments could be said to have come after the race in China, when Alonso was switched to soft tyres instead of hard tyres during a second safety car period, forcing him to make one more stop than his rivals and wasting a golden opportunity to shine.

But there were also particularly challenging back-to-back weekends in Spain and Austria, where Aston struggled to keep up with upgrades and lacked the speed to even challenge for points, causing plenty of headaches at the team’s brand new headquarters.
