5-year-old girl dies after collision with truck outside school in Hull

A five-year-old girl has died when she was hit by a truck outside a school in Hull.

The girl was cycling on Hopewell Road when she was hit by a heavy truck at around 3.40pm, Humberside Police said.

Paramedics treated her on site, but her death was confirmed shortly afterwards.

Out of respect, Oakfield School remained closed on Friday and flowers and teddy bears were left at the scene of the incident.

A statement from the school said: “Oakfield School will be closed to staff and students on Friday 12 April 2024 due to a serious incident involving a member of the public outside the school gates on Thursday. Oakfield School will reopen to staff and students on Monday.”

In a statement, Humberside Police said: “Officers are appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision in Hull yesterday afternoon (Thursday 11 April).”

“We were called to Hopewell Road following a report that a heavy goods vehicle and a child on a bicycle were involved in an accident at approximately 3.40pm.

“Emergency services were dispatched, but despite their efforts, the cyclist, a five-year-old girl, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

“Her family is being supported by officials at this extremely sad and difficult time.

“We would like to thank the members of the public who came to the aid of those affected while emergency services arrived and for the support shown so far by the wider local community.”

Anyone who was in the area at the time of the accident, or who has CCTV or dashboard footage that may assist police investigations, is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting log 345 of 11 April.
