Zeeshan Ali resigns as Davis Cup coach of the Indian tennis team

Ali Zeeshan announced his resignation as coach of the Indian Davis Cup Tennis team on Wednesday.

“I have been the coach of the Davis Cup team for 11 years now,” Zeeshan, who replaced Nandan Bal as the coach of the Indian Davis Cup team in 2013, told PTI.

“And to top it all, I was also captain of the Davis Cup, the historic match we played against Pakistan in Pakistan earlier this year. I don’t think there is any person from any country who has had the privilege and honour of doing all three things,” said 54-year-old Zeeshan.

India advanced to World Group I after beating Pakistan 4-0 in the play-offs in Islamabad in February.

India’s next Davis Cup appearance is a World Group I away match against Sweden on September 14 and 15 in Stockholm. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has not yet announced Zeeshan Ali’s successor.

Zeeshan Ali, who represented India at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, said he would now focus on developing the National Tennis Centre (NTC).

“My whole focus is on NTC. You will also hear about it in the coming weeks; about the plans that AITA has with regard to NTC,” said Zeeshan Ali.

The NTC is an academy in New Delhi to improve tennis at the grassroots level in India.

“So that’s going to require a lot more time and focus from me to make sure the program is running properly… and producing the next generation of champions, and that’s where my focus and energy will be now,” he added.

Zeeshan Ali is a former junior player who was ranked No. 2 in the world and No. 126 on the ATP tour at the age of 18. He won 14 ITF junior tournaments and reached the singles semifinals at the Wimbledon Juniors at the age of 16. However, a back injury ended his playing career when he was just 25 and he has been a coach ever since.
