British girl discovers dinosaur footprints while walking on the beach: “Cool and exciting”

The incredible discovery was made on the coast of South Wales

A leisurely summer stroll on the beach turned into a prehistoric adventure for a 10-year-old girl in the UK when she stumbled upon giant footprints. While strolling along the beach in Penarth with her mother, Tegan came across five giant footprints that dinosaur experts believe belong to a Camelot that roamed the area over 200 million years ago. BBC reported.

The huge prints, which are up to 75 cm apart, are believed to be from a large herbivore from the Late Triassic. Palaeontologists are currently working to confirm the discovery. The Palaeontology Curator at the National Museum Wales is convinced that the prints are genuine. Tegan and her mother are thrilled to have followed in the footsteps of the dinosaurs.

“We have five footprints and the distance between each one is about half a meter to three quarters of a meter. These footprints are so large that they must be a species of dinosaur called Sauropodomorpha,” Cindy Howells said on the BBC’s “The Dinohunters” programme.

The incredible discovery was made on the coast of South Wales, where the girl’s mother, Claire, lived.

“It was so cool and exciting. We were just outside looking to see what we could find, but we didn’t think we would find anything. We found these big holes that looked like dinosaur footprints, so mom took some photos, emailed them to the museum and it was of a long-necked dinosaur,” Tegan said.

Following this remarkable discovery, Claire contacted Cindy by email just a few days later. The dinosaur footprints had been found in red siltstone at Lavernock Point, a site between Cardiff and Barry on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.

Cindy, a veteran dinosaur expert with 40 years of experience in the region, was convinced of the authenticity of the footprints because of the consistent walking pattern. “It is notable that the left and right feet alternate with a consistent distance between them. If these were just random holes, we would be skeptical, but this pattern suggests deliberate walking. It is a significant discovery and the excitement is palpable when someone contacts us with a confirmed dinosaur find – it is really exciting,” she explained.

“It’s hard to comprehend that you’re walking on the same beach where a giant prehistoric animal lived hundreds of millions of years ago. You can spend a lifetime searching for dinosaur treasures and for this to happen for Tegan at this age is amazing,” she added.
