The Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member (NSTM) inspection is an in-depth, hands-on examination of the bridge’s critical elements. In the past, the Roebling Suspension Bridge underwent this routine inspection every two years, with the most recent NSTM inspection taking place in August 2022. Going forward, this type of bridge inspection will be required every 12 months.

The inspection will require the closure of individual lanes on the bridge, with traffic being directed by traffic officers. There are no specific time limits for these lane closures. The inspection may require a temporary closure of the sidewalk. One sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians at all times.

In addition, the bridge will need to be completely closed for short periods of approximately one hour to allow inspection equipment to be placed on the walkways. These full closures will be kept to a minimum to reduce impact on traffic and are necessary to ensure a thorough and safe inspection of the bridge.

The inspection will be carried out by AECOM and, weather permitting, the overall project is expected to be completed by Friday 30 August.

The date, time and duration of the work may be adjusted in case of bad weather or other unforeseen delays.
