SUMMARY: Sounders lose 3-0 to LAFC and are eliminated from the Leagues Cup

The Seattle Sounders were eliminated from the 2024 Leagues Cup on Saturday night after a 3-0 loss to LAFC in the quarterfinals. Ryan Hollingshead and Kei Kamara each scored a goal in the first half before Denis Bouanga added a third shortly after halftime.

Seattle started the game promisingly and Paul Rothrock forced LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to make a save from close range in the 5th minute after a masterful run down the left flank.

Just nine minutes later, the visitors took the lead when Hollingshead took a diagonal pass, stormed into the box and fired his shot into the bottom corner.

In the 18th minute, the Sounders almost equalized when a cross from João Paulo found Rothrock at the back post, but the resulting volley was blocked and a corner was awarded.

LAFC doubled their lead in the 25th minute when Kei Kamara took advantage of a missed corner and volleyed the ball into the net.

Seattle had a few half-chances before half-time, with Albert Rusnák and João Paulo each firing dangerous shots from outside the box but failing to beat goalkeeper Lloris.

LAFC made it 3-0 in the 51st minute when Lloris played a ball over Seattle’s back line to Bouanga. The 2023 MLS MVP finalist fended off a challenge from Nouhou before firing a shot into the corner.

The Sounders had a pair of high-quality chances in the 64th minute, as a Josh Atencio shot was cleared off the line by an LAFC defender and Jordan Morris’ header missed the far post by inches.

In the 80th minute, Raúl Ruidíaz weaved his way through several defenders and then tried to lob Lloris, but his shot flew over the bar.

Saturday night was the Sounders’ second consecutive 3-0 loss to LAFC. Seattle has a chance for revenge on August 28 when they host the Black & Gold in the US Open Cup at Starfire Stadium.

The Sounders’ resurgence in recent months has been largely thanks to the team’s rekindled attack. Seattle’s loss in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals was only the second time since May 15 that the Rave Green failed to score a point.

The Sounders resume MLS regular season play on August 24 when they visit Minnesota United at Allianz Field (3:30 p.m. PT; viewable with MLS Season Pass, FOX).
