MARION, Virginia – The man accused of shooting a Smyth County sheriff’s deputy and wounding another has died at an area hospital.

Timothy Wayne Goodman, 65, of North Carolina, died Friday morning at Johnson City Medical Center, according to a statement from Smyth Commonwealth’s Attorney Phillip Blevins.

Goodman was charged with murder for killing Deputy Hunter Reedy after a traffic stop on August 9. He was also charged with four counts of attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

“The tragic loss of Deputy Reedy has deeply impacted our community and the police family,” Blevins said. “My office remains committed to honoring Deputy Reedy’s life and service. Goodman’s death closes an important chapter in this matter, but our commitment to supporting Deputy Reedy’s family, the other officers involved and the entire police community is as strong as ever.”

Reedy died last Friday during a traffic stop along with Marion Police Department officers, officials previously said. Goodman reportedly became agitated after being summoned and fired shots at Reedy and Deputy Michael Fedorchuk. The second deputy was treated and released from the hospital the next day.

Officials reported that Marion police attempted to pull over Goodman, but he refused to stop and drove about a mile into the county before stopping.

“My office will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure that all aspects of this case are handled appropriately. We are extremely grateful to the law enforcement partners who assisted Smyth County during this tragedy and to the community for their love and support,” Blevins said.
