With the 2028 Olympic Games taking place in Los Angeles, fans can look forward to some new and returning sports.
In October 2023, the International Olympic Committee announced its approval of five additional host cities for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Lacrosse, cricket and baseball will return to the Olympic Games in La La Land. Softball will also return – but together with another sport, canoe slalom, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Flag football and squash will also be included in the Games program for the first time in 2028.
“The choice of these five new sports is consistent with American sporting culture and will showcase iconic American sports to the world while bringing international sport to the United States. These sports will make the LA28 Olympic Games unique,” IOC President Thomas Bach said at the announcement last year. “Their inclusion will allow the Olympic Movement to reach new athlete and fan communities in the United States and around the world.”
Depending on the status of the international leadership of boxing, a return may or may not happen.
Fans will also have to say goodbye to other sports, including the eagerly awaited new sport “Breaking”.
Although breaking, commonly known as breakdancing, originated in the United States, it will not make its way to the City of Angels after its Paris debut this summer.
Breaking contestants were reportedly aware of this in advance: “It was disappointing that it was decided that it wouldn’t be in LA, especially before we even had a chance to show it,” said Raygun, a contestant whose real name is Rachael Gunn, according to Unilad.
Raygun, who scored zero points in the breakdancing competition, went viral after clips of her dance moves surfaced.
“Breaking is clearly a sporting discipline that requires a high level of dedication in many different areas. It really brings a new level of excitement,” added Raygun.
