Coventry MP Zarah Sultana blames the “right-wing press”, Conservative austerity and “I’m a Celebrity” for the far-right unrest

Outspoken Coventry MP Zarah Sultana made a heated appearance on Good Morning Britain. The Coventry South MP appeared on the show this morning (5 August) during a segment on the ugly riots that have broken out across the country.

These include ugly scenes in nearby Tamworth, where windows at a Holiday Inn were smashed with firebombs and police officers were injured. The now independent MP, who has lost the Labour leadership, blamed a number of different factors for the scenes and criticised the failure to label them “racist” or “Islamophobic”.

“I spoke to my father, who reminded me that he faced racist, right-wing extremist and fascist violence when he was growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, and that today we are seeing violence taking hold in towns and cities across the country,” she said.

“We need to call this racist and we need to call it Islamophobic because if we don’t we’re failing to really address what’s going on and language is really important. I noticed the Daily Telegraph called it a counter-protester by Muslims.

“On the one hand, people are burning down community centers and libraries, attacking mosques, attacking black and brown people walking in their communities, and attacking women wearing their hijabs. On the other hand, others are defending their communities and standing up when they cannot find other help.

“So we really need to be clear about what’s going on here. I have to say it should be no surprise that this happened. Decades of work by the right-wing press and politicians have stoked the flames of this hatred.”

She attacked GB News and the Daily Mail, whose columnist and consulting editor Andrew Pierce was on the panel. She spoke about the newspaper’s language and he challenged her to give concrete examples – which she promised to do after the broadcast.

In addition to the Daily Mail, she also criticised ITV itself for allowing Nigel Farage to appear on “I’m a celebrity”. Media and journalists as well as politicians, including the former Home Secretary, who described refugees as an invasion. Nigel Farage, also on GB News, said British Muslims do not share the same values.

“When we look at complicity, there are a lot of things people have to think about. That includes the role ITV played in inviting Nigel Farage and allowing him to rehabilitate his image on ‘I’m a Celeb’.”

She added: “If we talk about where this comes from, I would say that the economic system that has allowed inequality to worsen in this country has lowered the standard of living.”

“Our communities have borne the brunt of Conservative austerity and on the right of politics, in the media, migrants, Muslims and trans people are being blamed for people not being able to access social housing, not being able to get appointments on the NHS and not having school places for their children. Rather than saying that this is the result of political decisions by successive governments,

“People blamed and scapegoated minorities.”

She also clashed several times with former minister Ed Balls when he tried to ask her questions, including whether she agreed with immigration controls and discussing an article he had written while a Labour MP.

The local MP added that social media was also being used to spread hate, saying they had been told to “go home” and had received threats. She added that Parliament needed to be reconvened following the unrest that had taken place since the weekend.
