To summarize the 2023-24 fantasy basketball season, let’s review and analyze the impact of the Dallas Mavericks players.

Dallas Mavericks Fantasy Basketball 2023-24 Season Review

Luka Doncic

Superstar Luka Doncic was a top fantasy player in categories and points leagues (depending on settings) in 2023-24. This was his best mark yet, as he has been ranked outside the top 10 his entire career, according to Basketball Monster. The five-time All-Star averaged nearly a triple-double, ranking second in the NBA in points and threes and third in assists. The only category Doncic failed in was turnovers, as he averaged the second-highest in the league. He’s a good blocker and not the most efficient free throw shooter, but he made strides by setting a personal best, converting nearly 80% of his shots at the free throw line. Conversely, his shooting percentage is solid for someone who attempted the most shots per game in the league. The 25-year-old also contributed some steals and rebounds, but he shines most on offense. Doncic’s best performances were points, assists and three-pointers – all career highs.

Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving’s fantasy ranking dropped slightly after being traded to the Mavericks at the 2023 trade deadline, but he still has borderline top-10 value in category leagues. Despite his stellar performance, some managers are hesitant to draft the eight-time All-Star as his antics and injury history have notoriously limited his time on the court. The last time Irving played 70+ games was with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016-17. His availability issues aside, the guard is an excellent multi-category contributor and has no notable deficiencies in any area. The only stats he fell a little short on were blocks and rebounds, but he provided a decent amount. The 32-year-old still shines in points, threes and assists, although his numbers in those columns have declined in recent years. Irving’s accuracy from the floor and from the free throw line was also excellent, making field goals at the second-highest rate of his career. Additionally, for a frequent player, he doesn’t cause many turnovers and can secure balls.

Daniel Gafford

After beginning the 2023-24 season with the Washington Wizards, Daniel Gafford was traded to Dallas midseason. The move was disappointing for his fantasy value. With the Wizards, he enjoyed a starting position where he averaged a career-high over 26 minutes of playing time per game. With the Mavericks, his playing time dropped by five as his signing led to a battle for the center rotation. Looking at Gafford’s overall season, his contributions in blocks and field goal percentage were extremely valuable. The big man ranked in the top three in the NBA in efficiency from the field and in the top 10 in blocks. His rebounding and few turnovers were also solid, but he didn’t offer much else. He didn’t contribute many steals, although his total stocks were three. Offensively, his low double-digit points weren’t impactful, nor were his few dimes and nonexistent threes. In addition, his free throw percentage was below average and he made less than 70% of his shots.

Dereck Lively II

Before Gafford moved to Dallas, Dereck Lively II held the starting center position. He didn’t begin the season in that role, but the 12th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft quickly proved his worth and earned the spot. The rookie finished the year with the league’s most efficient shooting percentage, his best category. Lively also contributed valuable points through his blocking, few turnovers, and rebounding. His performance in the offensive categories, however, wasn’t as beneficial. He didn’t shoot threes and was a low-hitting free throw shooter, converting barely more than half of his attempts. He scored a few points and flashed some playmaking skills, but not enough for fantasy relevance. Although his game still needs improvement and his value dropped when he started sharing playing time with Gafford, Lively showed great potential in his first year.

PJ Washington

PJ Washington was another player Dallas acquired at the trade deadline. He came from the Charlotte Hornets. In Charlotte, he played mostly off the bench, but with the Mavericks, he got a starting spot and over 30 minutes per game. However, 2023-24 was his lowest fantasy ranking in recent years. None of his numbers turned heads, but Washington provided some late-round value with his performance in a few categories. Defensively, he provided a solid number of shares and some rebounds. The 25-year-old was also known for his few turnovers and three-point shots. However, this didn’t translate into many points and he wasn’t much of a playmaker, averaging less than two assists for the first time in his career. The power forward/center also lacked shooting efficiency, with his splits being at the lower end of his career average.
