A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck early Sunday in the Pacific Ocean off Russia’s east coast near a major naval base, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake triggered a tsunami warning, which was later lifted.

The earthquake occurred 29 kilometers below the earth’s surface and its epicenter was about 102 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the US Geological Survey said.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is a port city of over 181,000 inhabitants, surrounded by volcanoes and facing a bay with an important Russian submarine base.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the US National Weather Service in Honolulu had initially warned that dangerous tsunami waves were possible on the coasts within a radius of 480 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake, but later announced that the danger had passed.

The center said some coastal areas near the earthquake zone may experience minor sea level fluctuations for several hours.
