Deputy removes umbilical cord from baby’s neck after mother

An Alabama sheriff’s deputy is being honored for saving a life after a mother went into labor at home over the summer.

Sergeant Jeremy Barbin of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will receive a Lifesaving Medal at the police academy graduation ceremony on Friday, August 16, for his quick response when he was stopped by a man whose girlfriend was giving birth.

“When I opened the door, I saw a young woman lying on the floor and another middle-aged woman yelling, ‘Help me, help me,'” Barbin said in a video posted on the department’s Facebook page.

Body camera footage showed the officer running into the house and seeing the woman lying on the ground.

When he entered the house, it was clear that the woman was in labor, so he got up to help her, according to a television program. The National DeskBarbin then said he and his partner “intervened” to help save the baby.

“The umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck, so we were able to detach it from the baby’s neck,” he continued in a video shared by local station ABC 33/40.

“I could feel the heartbeat and knew the baby was breathing, but I had no way to clear the airway or anything,” he added. “So I tried to run my finger through the mouth. I wrapped the baby up to keep him as warm as possible until the paramedics got to the scene.”

“It is not every day that a deputy has the extraordinary experience of delivering a baby while on the job,” the JCSO said in a statement to The National Desk“This remarkable event underscores the dedication and professionalism of our police officers, who are always willing to go above and beyond in unexpected situations.”
