Cleveland Cavaliers sign former 2021 draft pick to two-way contract

The Cleveland Cavaliers are still looking for a few roster spots as training camp and preseason approach. They have filled one of the vacant spots by JT Thor to a two-way contract for the 2024–25 season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Thor last played with South Sudan at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In 16.5 minutes per game, he averaged 6.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists and made 28.8 percent of his shots from behind the three-point line.

The biggest highlight of Thor’s game in Paris was his defense. He achieved a defense rating of 108.9, which was better than 70 percent of players.

Thor brings some NBA experience.

He was selected in the second round of the 2021 draft by the Charlotte Hornets and has appeared in 165 games over the past three seasons, averaging 3.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.5 assists.

During his last season with the Hornets, Thor averaged 3.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.5 assists. One of his best performances came in the final game of the season against the Cavaliers, where the forward scored 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds and provided four assists.

Since Thor is on a two-way contract, he will not spend the entire season with the Cavaliers, but he provides the team with much-needed depth at forward in case of injury or other unforeseen circumstances.

It will be interesting to see how Kenny Atkinson and the Cavaliers will use Thor next season.
